Dallas County elections chief: About 4,000 voters could have received the wrong ballots.
The meeting where school boards and city councils canvass and certify election results is usually an elephant dart to the noggin. It’s boring.
Today’s brought drama. The reported issues with the poll books on Election Day impacted close to 4,000 ballots, which means about that many Dallas County voters could have received the wrong ballot. County Elections Chief Heider Garcia told council members that some of those ballots listed the 18 Dallas charter amendments despite those voters not living in the city. The opposite was also true; some voters in the city received ballots that had none of the propositions listed. This snafu has caused concern around the horseshoe, since the difference in Proposition U passing was 2,986 votes. It’s unclear whether those people voted on the amendments or how they voted—or even if this problem would impact the outcome of the election.
City Attorney Tammy Palomino told the City Council it cannot protest or refuse to canvass the vote. However, election law does allow the treasurer of a political action committee or at least 25 people who voted in the election to jointly request a recount of any proposition.
Stay tuned.
