U.S. News and World Report released its latest hospital rankings today, and five of the state’s top 15 hospitals are Dallas-Fort Worth facilities, including two of the top three in Dallas. According to the ranking, UT Southwestern remains the region’s top facility and the state’s second-best hospital, and Baylor Scott & White Health has three hospitals in the top 15 in the state.
The annual rankings are in their 30th year, comparing 4,500 hospitals nationwide in three dozen specialties, including cancer care, orthopedics, cardiology, and more. The publication ranks hospitals by state and region and names a national honor roll of the country’s top 20 hospitals. Organizations rank hospitals for everything from patient safety to equal access, and the U.S. News rankings have been criticized for focusing on specialty care rather than serving a broad patient spectrum. This year, the publication released its Best Regional Hospitals for Equitable Access list, which named Parkland Health and JPS Health Network as the best in the state for equity.
Texas’ only hospital on the national honor roll is Houston Methodist Hospital, which was tied with UT Southwestern Medical Center for the top hospital in the state in last year’s rankings. This year, UTSW is ranked second in the state, followed by Baylor University Medical Center at No. 3.
Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Temple and Baylor Scott & White All Saints Medical Center – Fort Worth were also in the state’s top 15. In North Texas, UTSW and BUMC were followed by All Saints Fort Worth, Texas Health Presbyterian Dallas, and Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Southwest. Medical City Dallas was ranked No. 6, and Methodist Dallas Medical Center was ranked No. 8 in Dallas-Fort Worth. U.S. News analyzed 100 metropolitan areas to honor 466 hospitals in its regional rankings.
According to U.S. News, five of the nation’s best 20 hospitals are in California, and four are in New York. Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston remains the country’s top facility.
Despite dropping one spot in the statewide rankings, UTSW is ranked in 11 specialties by U.S. News, the most of any hospital in the state. Six of those specialties are ranked in the top 25. The medical center’s highest ranks are 15th in the nation for diabetes and endocrinology and 15th for rehabilitation. It was also named the top hospital in North Texas for the eighth consecutive year. UTSW and Texas Health Resources are united through the Southwestern Health Resources network, which claims five of the top 10 hospitals in North Texas. BUMC had six ranked specialties, with its highest rank being 34th in the nation for pulmonology and lung surgery.
“Our collaborative multidisciplinary approach to patient care, as in our overall mission to educate, discover, and heal, continues to drive innovation at UT Southwestern and produce exceptional outcomes for the patients and families we are privileged to serve,” said Dr. Daniel Podolsky, president of UT Southwestern. “In parallel with ensuring that our patients have access to the most advanced technologies and treatments, we remain hyperfocused on providing the best care experience for them and their families. In the search for an even better tomorrow, our campus community is committed to translating scientific discoveries into improved treatments not only for our patients but also for patients worldwide.”
