City may sell off old, gross Family Gateway location.

At its Wednesday meeting, the Dallas City Council will consider selling the Old Family Gateway building at 711 South Saint Paul St.

In May, Councilmember Jesse Moreno fired off a memo to interim City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert after he and his team found it unsecured and vandalized, full of people and animals and excrement. Moreno demanded that the city do a better job securing its own property. (Be careful with that memo. The pictures aren’t a great lunch chaser.) “I define a secure City facility as one which does not need Dallas Police Department to clear it before it is accessed, one that is free from unauthorized inhabitants, and one which does not present biological hazards to authorized personnel,” he wrote.

City staff believes it could fetch at least a couple million at auction, which would be divided between the city’s capital reserve fund and the general fund. While it would appease some of the Council’s growing calls for the city to sell off unused property, it would also fall woefully short of chipping away at the presently $3 billion police and fire pension shortfall.
