Mary Anne Smiley Interiors, LLC
When it comes to interior design in Dallas, there are a few legends who immediately come to mind— Mary Anne Smiley among them. When she arrived in Dallas in the early 2000s, 18th century design trends ruled the scene. “Everything was Georgian design, somewhat heavy and muted,” Smiley recalls. “From day one, I have been about color. I was one of the first designers in Dallas to encourage clients to step out of that 18th-century look and embrace color and cutting-edge design. It caught on.”
Smiley was also among the first designers in Dallas to have a web site that featured her work. “That changed the landscape of Dallas design, too,” she says. “My signature color is Tiffany blue, and I highlighted my web site with bright, beautiful turquoise color. I became the designer people turned to for fresh, new design. Suddenly, turquoise started popping up everywhere!”
Now in her 35th year of design, Smiley still embraces what’s new and next, using autoCAD to design interiors and implementing innovative materials in unexpected ways—think countertops showcasing a cowhide covered with half an inch of resin for a ranch home bar top.
“There are exciting new products emerging all the time,” she says. “I love to explore how to use a new product in creative design solutions. When I was a child, I would line up the Montgomery Ward catalog fabric swatches and dream of what I could create with them. I still do that. Proportion, balance, and good lines are the basis of my designs, upon which I build the design with new techniques and products. I won’t sell out to trends and will always chase the best possible design for my client. Good design lasts forever.”
