When I Went: July 10-22, 2011

Was That the Best Time of Year to Go? It’s warmest in summer, with temperatures in the 60s and 70s and a slight drizzle of rain once or twice a day.

Why I Went There: To visit friends who lived there.

Who Went With Me? Met up with friends who live in Southwark.

We Stayed Here: Marlin Apartments in Empire Square.

National Gallery in Trafalgar Square for paintings by Turner, Van Gogh, Monet, Michelangelo, da Vinci, and Rembrandt. Tate Modern in Southbank for Jackson Pollock, Diane Arbus, Guerrilla Girls, Braque, Picasso, and Diego Rivera. The view of the city from St. Paul’s Cathedral. And the Tower of London, by far the best historical landmark.

Eat Here: Fine Foods Italian deli in Southwark for awesome sandwiches, Long Lane Fish Bar for great fish and chips, and Porters in Covent Garden.

Play Here: Most pubs are hopping with locals after work. Grab a pint and mingle.

If I Went Again: I’d wear better shoes; London is a walking town. Always carry an umbrella.

How Did You Get There From Dallas? DFW Airports to London Heathrow Airport direct via American Airlines.

Other Tips For Fellow Travelers: If shopping in Camden Market or Covent Garden, learn to haggle.
