Last Sunday, for the first time, the shiny silver pozzetto canisters at Palmieri Café in the Farmers Market Shed—those gelato receptacles that have sat empty under the espresso counter while owner Corrado Palmieri went about the business of perfecting pastries—were filled with cool, creamy gelato.
There are only four flavors for now, which Palmieri has made with his usual attention to quality and precise sourcing. Pistachio is rich and nutty, with pistachios from Sicily, intense and almost savory. Nocciola made with hazelnuts from Piemonte is just as simple and bewitching. There is a milky vanilla with amareno cherry and a deep, dark gianduja, the original, classic hazelnut-chocolate pairing that’s so magnificently decadent (and makes Nutella look like the ligher-weight knock-off that it is).
